How to crop an image
- Drag your photo into the box above, or click to browse. JPG, PNG and WebP all work.

Cropping, resizing and compressing are three different things
They get mixed up constantly, and picking the wrong one is why people end up with a photo that still looks wrong. Cropping throws away the parts of the picture outside your selection — it changes what is in the frame. Resizing keeps the whole picture but changes how many pixels it is made of. Compressing keeps both the framing and the dimensions, and only makes the file lighter.
So: cut out a distracting background with the cropper here, make a 4000px photo fit a 1200px slot with the resizer, and get a file under an upload limit with the compressor. They stack happily — crop first, then resize, then compress.
Common crop ratios and where they are used
1:1 is the safe choice for profile pictures and avatars, because almost every platform displays them in a circle or square. 4:3 and 3:2 are the classic camera shapes and are what printed photos expect. 16:9 matches screens and video thumbnails. 9:16 is the vertical full-screen shape used by phone stories and short video. Choosing the right one before you upload means the platform is not left to guess which half of your picture to cut off.

How do I crop a picture to a square?
Set the shape selector to Square (1:1). The selection box locks to a perfect square, and you can still drag it around the photo and resize it from any corner before downloading.
Does cropping reduce the quality of my photo?
Cropping keeps the original pixels of the area you selected, at full resolution — nothing is scaled down. If you save as JPG or WebP the file is re-encoded, so leave the quality slider high, or choose PNG for a lossless result.
Can I crop a photo on my phone?
Yes. The selection box and its corner handles respond to touch, so you can drag and resize the crop with your finger exactly as you would with a mouse.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The cropper works entirely inside your browser. Your photo is read from your device, cropped on your device, and saved back to your device — it is never transmitted anywhere.
